In many forums, you can find countless threads with “which training site should I join?”. Forums have been a very helpful tool in the beginning, especially the 2+2 forums for me. Today I do not see great value in them in regards to poker strategy. They still have their social value, news & updates etc. There are also great forums for travelling, meeting up with fellow players. Really awesome stuff.

Anyways, there used to be only a few training sites out there and now every player owns one ;). Let me give you a few guidelines and recommendations that I think will be helpful in the post How to pick a coaching site . But first of all, let me tell you that I handpicked a few sites.

Coaching Project: Learning how to beat HU

Hey guys,

In this coaching series I´d like to turn a decent 6max midstakes player into a HU player that can beat all the regs at his level. It will be an open poker coaching program.

My mentoring history:

Without hiding my pride, I’d like to brag about some former long term students that I had. One guy was still in high school, beating NL100 6max, but got hammered every time he tried to move up to NL200. He contacted me and at that time I was looking to take on a protégé. In a period of only 6 months, while having his graduation year, he played up to 5-10 HU. At the moment I am mentoring another close friend of mine and his success story looks even greater!

My motivation:

I get a kick out of success stories, especially if I can help and be part of it. Back when I played fulltime (ok, it’s only 3 months ago), I wasn´t into coaching at all in general. My attitude was selfish and I had no interest at all in improving other players that weren´t close friends – since it would basically cost me money in the longrun. It’s like educating your competitors. Not something I was looking to do ;). Today it’s not like I turned on my altruistic mode, but my views did change a bit and I don´t care at all about maximizing profits anymore. Things come and go. Coaching is something that I genuinely enjoy – in many areas. So while working on this blog, I might as well do what I´m good at and what I love.

Why playing tournaments professionally is such a terrible choice:

This article is especially about tournaments that take 4+ hours. I´m not talking about 3 table turbos. I´m also not talking about STTs (single table tournies) or smaller SNGs (sit and goes). They have their flaws in my opinion and I will address them in another post. If you happen to play MTTs for a living and if you like your life, keep on doing what you like. I´m the last one who wants to stop people from doing what they love. Don´t be offended. If you do feel offended, think about why.

1) Limited Income

At tournaments you can only improve so much. There is a limit (besides the natural limit/limit of talent). You can only play so many tables and you can only have a certain winrate. 75% ROI for big MTTs long term is around as good as you can get. Of course there might be higher numbers out there, but the 75% ROI is a product of playing the highest stakes in MTTs and playing multi tables.

My personal money slave: Moneybookers

Today´s review will be about moneybookers . For those who haven´t heard of them before: Moneybookers is an e-wallet. This means they provide financial services online similar to what paypal does. Moneybookers is the biggest and in my opinion by far the best company in the online gaming sector. Typical competitors would be neteller, e-wallet, e-cash and a dozen others.

Poker Mindset #1 – Stoicism

Poker Mindset Series Overview

In the mindset series I will be addressing some ways of thinking about the world & poker that helped me to improve my game and overall life.

If you are struggling in the way that you can’t accept that life isn’t fair and just, I would recommend you to take a look at Stoicism. Even if not, I’d advise everybody to take a look at this article about Stoicism. It might help you in other areas that I wouldn’t even be remotely thinking of.
Please don’t be lazy, read it. Otherwise this article will provide no use/help for you. If you think Philosophy is boring in general, then don’t waste your time by reading this. Allow me the little brag and tell you that I had the pleasure to study and major in ancient Greek language in school. Do yourself (and me!) this little favor and participate in what I love so much :). Understand what apathia, ataraxia means. Understand the mindset and values of the Stoa.
